Data, ML & Underwriting

Arlo is rebuilding health insurance from the ground up using AI. The healthcare experience today is expensive, confusing, and often so frustrating that people delay the care they need. We’re changing that by reimagining what a health plan should be: a proactive partner that enables health rather than denying it. Our AI-native platform delivers continuous, personalized support for members—helping them navigate benefits, schedule appointments, access high-quality care, and avoid financial fear. Powered by the industry’s most advanced risk-pricing engine, Arlo is already scaling fast: we’ve grown to $XXXM in premiums, cover tens of thousands of people, and see accelerating demand across brokers, employers, and partners. Backed by Upfront Ventures, 8VC, and General Catalyst, our team combines deep industry expertise (Palantir, YC) with the ambition to modernize a $1T market.

The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Head of Data to architect, own, and scale the data systems that power Arlo’s core products and decision-making. This leader will take full ownership of mission-critical infrastructure and transform fragmented data sources into clean, intelligent, and highly automated systems. You’ll be one of the most impactful technical leaders in the company, shaping the future of how an AI-native insurer operates.

What You Will Do

  • Own Arlo’s end-to-end data infrastructure — from ingestion to modeling to analytics — ensuring it is scalable, reliable, and supports real-time decision-making across the business.

  • Lead the evolution of our underwriting, pricing, and financial data systems, transforming complex inputs (claims, rates, census data, TPA feeds) into clean, trustworthy, and automated pipelines.

  • Design and maintain Arlo’s core data models and “source of truth” tables that power reporting, high-cost claimant identification, case management signals, and partner-facing deliverables.

  • Build and standardize data ingestion processes for internal and external data sources, including multiple TPAs, carriers, and partner systems.

  • Enable intelligence across the organization by creating abstractions, automations, and reasoning layers that enhance pricing, renewals, cost containment, and care navigation.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering, underwriting, data science, operations, and product to drive data consistency, governance, and visibility across teams.

  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on execution, setting standards for quality, performance, and reliability in a rapidly scaling environment.

What We’re Looking For

Must-Haves

  • BSc in Computer Science or related field

  • 5-7 years of industry experience

  • Strong understanding of statistics, ML concepts, and database fundamentals

  • Experience with large-scale data tools (Spark, Pandas, AWS, Postgres)

  • Demonstrated ability to architect & build robust pipelines and scalable data models

  • High hands-on engineering ability—you enjoy building, not just reviewing

  • Ability to rapidly acquire deep domain expertise

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills

  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-ownership environments

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience at an early-stage startup or in health insurance data (claims, underwriting, actuarial, TPA data, etc.)

  • Familiarity with reasoning models, LLMs, and MLops practices

  • Background working with sensitive financial or healthcare datasets

  • Experience building data products for pricing, risk, or reporting
